A big day by a trio of players propelled the Van Horn boys basketball team into the district semifinals.

Jaden Monday, Caleb Tanis and Xavier Marrero combined for 71 of the Falcons’ 78 points and 15 rebounds to power them to a 78-59 rout of Odessa in the first round of the Class 4 District 14 Tournament Monday at Kearney High School.

Van Horn grabbed a 38-26 lead at halftime and pulled away late for the win.

Monday poured in 33 points and added five rebounds and five assists. Tannis tallied 22 points, six rebounds and three steals, while Marrero added 16 points, four rebounds and two steals.

The fourth-seeded Falcons, who improved to 13-12, advance to Thursday’s semifinals against top-seeded Raytown South (17-8).

LEE’S SUMMIT WEST 72, BLUE SPRINGS SOUTH 69: Blue Springs South couldn’t hold on to a halftime lead in a Suburban Big Six loss in its regular-season finale on Friday.

The visiting Titans outscored the Jaguars 27-12 in the third quarter to erase South’s 38-30 halftime lead.

“Credit Lee’s Summit West, they wanted it a whole lot more than we did,” Jaguars coach Josh Smith said. “Pretty disappointed with our defense, especially in the third quarter.”

Jaylon McDaniel scored 25 points to lead South, which dropped to 16-8 overall and 6-3 in the conference. Caleb Israelite added 14 points and Khayden Hooks had 13.

The Jaguars are the top seed in the Class 5 District 14 tournament and meet Grain Valley in a 5:30 p.m. semifinal Thursday.
