A doubles sweep helped the Lee’s Summit North boys tennis team to a shutout in its season opener Wednesday.
Joe Hammerly won at No. 1 singles and teamed with Matthew DeBacker for a No. 1 doubles win to lead the Broncos to a 9-0 victory over host Lee’s Summit.
Hammerly and DeBacker topped Lee’s Summit’s Hunter Hess and Kaleb Wilbert 8-5 to start the doubles sweep. Nick Mathis and Logan Leslie (No. 2) and Lukas Parrish and Michael Welsh (No. 3) each won 8-0.
“We came out strong with good doubles play and were able to keep that momentum on into our singles matches,” Broncos coach Stu Reece said. “Joe played really well at No. 1, hitting smart shots with a tough wind.”
Hammerly topped Hess 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match. Mathis (6-1, 6-0), DeBacker (6-1, 6-2), Leslie (6-0, 6-1), Parrish (6-2, 6-1) and Welsh (6-0, 6-0) completed the sweep.
North’s junior varsity also won 9-0.
BARSTOW 8. ST. MICHAEL 1: Justin House and Oliver Welman prevailed 8-6 in No. 1 doubles, but that was all St. Michael the Archangel Catholic could get in a loss to Class 1 power Barstow Wednesday.
In Tuesday’s match, the Guardians fell 6-3. House won 8-2 in No. 1 singles and Welman triumphed 8-3 at No. 2 for St. Michael.
House and Jack Davis teamed for an 8-6 win in No. 1 doubles, but a pair of forfeits hurt the Guardians’ chances for the dual win.
