Seven must be a lucky number for the Grain Valley girls soccer team.
The Eagles won 7-0 against Van Horn in the Class 3 District 15 championship and earned their seventh consecutive district crown.
Raena Childers and Paige Novak led the Eagles (13-9) with two goals apiece; Kailey Larson added two assists; Kailyn Duett had a goal and an assist; Laxi Arreguin had an assist; and Maddie Shields and Rian Handy had one goal.
Grain Valley goalkeeper Raegan Beeding notched a shutout. The Eagles had 18 shots on goal.
“I am very happy with the way we played these last two nights,” Grain Valley coach Tyler Nichol said. “Shots weren’t going in for us first half, but our ball movement and runs were there. Thought Van Horn’s keeper (Vivian DeAvila) played a great game and had many saves. Just a few small details we will focus on before next Tuesday.”
The Eagles will take on the winner of a district final between Smithville and Kearney in a Class 3 sectional playoff Tuesday.
“We had two close losses to Kearney and went 1-1 against Smithville,” Nichol said. “We know that one will be tough but we feel like we are up for the task.”
OAK GROVE 7, ODESSA 0: The Panthers didn’t have much trouble advancing to the Class 2 District 12 tournament finals, dispatching Missouri River Valley Conference West rival Odessa Monday in the semifinals.
Freshman Annika Holtorf led the Panthers (18-3) with a hat trick and Meredith Forthofer, Mary Delgado, Jordan Hall and Kealyn Wilkinson each added one goal apiece.
