Boys tennis players from Blue Springs and Blue Springs South finally made it past players from Rockhurst.

Blue Springs South junior Sean Nguyen, the Class 2 District 14 singles champion, and Blue Springs junior Luke David, the district runner-up, each beat opponents from Rockhurst to earn state berths in the Class 2 Sectional 7 individual matches Tuesday at the Plaza Tennis Center.

Nguyen dominated Rockhurst’s Hudson Kotre 6-0, 6-1 to earn his first individual state berth.

“He dominated from the start,” Jaguars coach Nathan Mooney said of Nguyen, who sat out his sophomore season to focus on his studies. “You could tell he felt confident going in. He’s played great all year and did again today. I think it’s been five years since we’ve gotten a guy to state, so it feels good to get someone in there.”

Rooney said Nguyen pounded the end line with shot to rattle Kotre.

“It’s his consistency,” the coach said. “He was able to get shots deep all match and (Kotre) couldn’t handle it. (Nguyen) constantly put pressure on him.”

David downed Rockhurst’s Andrew Kopulos in straight sets too, 6-3, 6-2.

“It was a hot day and we haven’t played a whole lot in hot temperatures, but Luke came to play,” Wildcats coach Anna Cole said. “He was great at the net and had outstanding volleys – probably the best match I’ve seen him play all season. He moved his opponent well and hit the corners great. I am so proud of him and all his hard work. He earned every minute of this success.”

Nguyen and David advance to the Class 2 individual state tournament May 24-25 at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. They will be joined by the Lee’s Summit North doubles teams of Joe Hammerly and Matthew DeBacker and Nick Mathis and Logan Leslie, who won their sectional matches Monday.

Blue Springs South is still alive for a team state berth and will meet Rockhurst at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the team sectional at Plaza Tennis Center.
