O’FALLON, Mo. – Blue Springs seniors Tessa Valdivia and Gabe McClain continued their dominance in their respective events at the Class 5 Sectional 3 meet.
Valdivia claimed a pair of individual victories and helped two relays qualify for state and McClain won 800 meters and also helped a pair of relays advance at the meet Saturday at Fort Zumwalt West High School in O’Fallon.
The meet had originally been scheduled to run at Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia but was moved because of weather concerns.
Valdivia captured first in the 1,600 meters (5 minutes, 19.70) seconds and the 3,200 (11:46.81) while helping the 3,200 (4x800) relay (9:55.32) and 1,600 (4x400) relay (4:04.69) each capture second place.
McClain won the 800 in a time of 2:00.39 and helped the 1,600 relay win in 3:21.57 and the 3,200 relay take third (8:09.98) to advance to the Class 5 state meet Friday and Saturday at Jefferson City High School (the top four in each event advance to state).
Matt Marzolf also moved on with a third-place finish in the 400 (50.38 seconds), while Brock Wooderson (3,200, 10:16.25) and the 400 relay (42.89) each finished fourth.
For the Blue Springs girls, Koby Tyler advanced in two events, winning the shot put with a toss of 41 feet, 3.5 inches and taking fourth in the discus (120-11). Alyna Thibault joined Valdivia with a third-place finish in the 1,600 (5:22.37) while also helping the relays. Aisha Gaither moved on in the 100 hurdles (fourth, 15.87) and the 800 relay team was third (1:45.55).
Blue Springs South girls sprinter Cori Davis advanced in three events with third-place finishes in each of the 100 (12.14), 200 (25.60) and 300 hurdles (46.47).
Dillon Grover took third in the 3,200 (10:02.26) and Trey Vaval was third in the long jump (23-2) to qualify for the Blue Springs South boys.
The Lee’s Summit North boys made a strong showing with three wins and three athletes qualifying for state in two individual events each.
Keyon Mozee raced to a win in the 100 (10.74) and helped the 800 (4x200) relay win in 1:26.85.
Devon Richardson, who also took second in the triple jump (47-4.5), won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 10 inches. Isaiah Vigliano took second in both the 200 (22.39) and 400 (50.21), while Nyles Thomas advanced in the 200 (third, 22.46) and 100 (fourth, 10.94).
Aaron Barnhill took fourth in the javelin (156-2) and the 400 relay (second, 42.07) and 1,600 relay (fourth, 3:29.92) also advanced.
Annie McCord had the North girls’ lone individual win in the 800 (2:25.30), edging teammate Katie Wehrwein (2:25.76), and they helped the 3,200 relay triumph in 9:53.24. Two Broncos advanced in the pole vault with Annica Valmassei taking second (11 feet) and Hannah Wilhite finishing third (10-3).
Other state qualifiers for the North girls were Kinsey Fiedler (100, second, 12.04), Tiffany Hughley (400, third, 1:00.10), Raina Baker (400, fourth, 1:00.81) and the 400 relay (second, 49.15) and 1,600 relay (third, 4:05.57).
