Edison Rios continued his hot streak to help lift the Van Horn boys soccer team into the championship of the Kansas City Cup.

Rios recorded his third hat trick in four games Thursday to lead the Falcons to a 4-0 win over Belton in the tournament’s semifinals at Van Horn High School.

Van Horn advanced to Saturday’s 6 p.m. championship game against Guadalupe, a 7-1 winner over Raytown South in the other semifinal.

Rios recorded his hat trick in the first half Thursday, scoring in the 14th, 27th and 30th minutes – all on Angel DeAvila assists.

Julio Rios added a goal in the 53rd minute – also on a DeAvila assist – as the Falcons improved to 8-1 with their eighth straight victory.

Van Horn goalkeeeper Adrian Chavira made eight saves to record the shutout, the Falcons’ seventh shutout in eight games.

On Wednesday, the Falcons downed Smithville 2-1 in their final pool play game to reach the semifinals. Juan Rangel scored the first goal and Edison Rios scored the game-winner.

NORTH KANSAS CITY 3, WILLIAM CHRISMAN 2: William Chrisman couldn’t hold on to a 2-1 first-half lead in a Suburban Middle Seven home loss Thursday.

Ali Fakali scored in the seventh minute – just more than a minute after the Hornets scored – to tie it 1-1. Fakali put the Bears up 2-1 five minutes later.

But North Kansas City scored on a penalty kick in the 29th minute and took the lead in the 37th minute.

Chrisman, which was outshot 13-4 on goal, couldn’t get the equalizer in the second half and fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
