The Van Horn football team had enough offensive firepower Friday night.
Unfortunately for the Falcons, the Winnetonka Griffins had an answer each time to claim a 61-39 victory Friday at North Kansas City High School Stadium.
Caleb Tanis caught three touchdown passes from quarterback Sean Mitchell and Devontae Telar ran for a pair of scores but Van Horn dropped to 4-2 overall with the non-conference loss.
Tanis caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell with 6:55 left in the first quarter to put the Falcons ahead 7-5.
Telar’s 4-yard run with 11:39 left in the second quarter put the Falcons ahead 13-12.
After another Winnetonka touchdown and two-point conversion, Tanis caught a 39-yard scoring strike from Mitchell to tie it 20-20.
Mitchell scored on a 29-yard run with 49 seconds left in the first half to pull the Falcons within 33-27 at halftime.
The Griffins, though, answered with a pair of touchdowns to pull ahead 40-27 before Tanis scored on another TD pass with 6:06 left in the third quarter to make it 40-33.
Winnetonka again answered with a pair of scores before Telar made it 54-39 with a 1-yard plunge with 8:03 remaining. But that’s as close as Van Horn could get.
NORTH KANSAS CITY 40, TRUMAN 0: Truman failed to muster much offense in a non-conference home loss to North Kansas City Friday.
The Patriots dropped to 1-5 overall with the loss.
LEE’S SUMMIT NORTH 21, LEE’S SUMMIT WEST 14: Carlton Perkins threw for a pair of scores as Lee’s Summit North held off crosstown rival Lee’s Summit West for a Suburban Big Six victory Friday.
Perkins threw to Jaden Moore for a 15-yard score with 5:22 left in the second quarter to put the Broncos ahead 7-0.
Dayne Davis gave North a 14-0 halftime lead when he returned an interception 25 yards for a score. Davis finished the game with a pair of interceptions.
Lee’s Summit West scored on an 80-yard pass from Sammy Cooper to Colby Baggett to open the second half, but the Broncos responded with a Perkins 20-yard touchdown pass to tight end Logan Muckey to make it 21-7 with 1:52 left in the third quarter.
Cooper and Baggett connected on a 42-yard score with 2:54 left to play, but the Broncos held on to improve to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big Six.
Perkins finished 10-of-20 passing for 163 yards, two TDs and two interceptions. Muckey had 91 of those yards in four catches.
OAK GROVE 42, PLEASANT HILL 7: Clay Griffin scored three touchdowns – including one on defense – to lead visiting Oak Grove to a rout of the Roosters in an MRVC West matchup Friday.
Brenden Marsh added a pair of touchdown runs as the Panthers improved to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the Missouri River Valley Conference West.
Griffin scored on a 30-yard run with 46 seconds left in the first quarter to put the Panthers ahead 7-0. Marsh scored on a 3-yard run with 1:30 left in the second to make it 14-0 at halftime.
A long Griffin run set up a short touchdown run for Marsh and a 21-0 lead with 6:06 left in the third quarter. Adrian Whitehead made it 28-0 with a minute left in the third.
Griffin scored on another run with 10 minutes left and capped it with an interception return for a touchdown for a 42-0 lead with 8:32 remaining.
CASS MIDWAY 28, ST. MICHAEL 6: St. Michael the Archangel Catholic pulled within 14-6 with 4:09 left in the third quarter, but host Cass Midway pulled away for the win Friday in Cleveland, Mo.
Ellis Edwards scored on a 16-yard pass from Nicholas Haggerty but the Guardians missed the extra point kick to make it 14-6.
Haggert was 8-of-14 passing for 90 yards, one TD and two interceptions. Brandon Lane caught three passes for 44 yards, and Edwards finished with a team-high 46 yards rushing for St. Michael, which dropped to 2-4, snapping a two-game winning streak.
