The Grain Valley defense made a second-quarter lead hold up for a Suburban Small Seven win.
The Eagles scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter and claimed a 15-7 win despite being outgained by Kearney 313-273.
Willie Lanear and Hunter Newsome each had 4.5 tackles and an interception and Seth Dankenbring had 11 tackles, including one for loss, to help the Eagles hold on for the win.
Ian Acosta scored on a 5-yard pass from Gavin Smith to put Kearney ahead 7-0 with 8:31 left in the third quarter.
Quarterback Cole Keller scored on a 7-yard run on the first play of the second quarter. Chance Pittman scored on a two-point conversion run to put the Eagles ahead for good at 8-7 with 11:53 left in the half.
Keller connected with Parker Bosserman for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 43 seconds left in the half to extend the lead to 15-7 helped.
Keller finished 11-of-14 passing for 149 yards and ran for 22 yards. Jamore Goulden rushed 74 yards on 14 carries. Bosserman (64 yards) and Gavin Oyler (52 yards) each had four receptions as the Eagles improved to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
PARK HILL SOUTH 38, TRUMAN 0: Truman was unable to overcome a 21-0 halftime deficit in a Suburban Large Seven loss to host Park Hill South Friday.
The Patriots managed 160 total yards but couldn’t find the end zone. Dimitri Smith rushed for 52 yards on 17 carries to lead Truman, which dropped to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the Large Seven.
Truman quarterback Zane Anderson completed 8 of 17 passes for 79 yards and an interception. A.J. Gietzen had five of those receptions for 68 yards.
Park Hill South quarterback Matt Suchanik was 10 of 20 passing for 201 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Panthers (4-3, 3-2).
LEE’S SUMMIT 27, LEE’S SUMMIT NORTH 15: Lee’s Summit North struggled to get its offense on track in a home loss to crosstown rival Lee’s Summit Friday.
Lee’s Summit built a 20-3 lead and held off the Broncos behind quarterback Darrias Pearsall, who completed 18 of 26 passes for 179 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.
Devin DeRousse kicked a 28-yard field goal with 9:25 left in the second quarter to cut Lee’s Summit’s lead to 7-3, but Pearsall connected with Micah Manning for a 65-yard TD pass on the Tigers’ next possession to make it 13-3 at halftime.
A Pearsall 21-yard TD pass to Ryan Belt made it 20-3. Keyon Mozee, who was limited to 48 yards on 18 carries, scored on a 2-yard run to make it 20-9.
Pearsall to Belt for a 22-yard score put it out of reach for Lee’s Summit (4-3) with 2:24 left in the third quarter.
Carlton Perkins, who was 17 of 34 for 136 yards, threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Logan Muckey with 1:26 left, but it was too late. Muckey finished with 97 yards receiving on eight receptions, but the Broncos (4-3) managed just 200 yards to Lee’s Summit’s 321.
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS 35, OAK GROVE 22: Oak Grove’s second-half rally fell short in a Missouri River Valley Conference West loss to the host Tigers Friday.
Down 21-0, Hunter Jones connected with Brenden Marsh on a 31-yard score and Clay Griffin ran in the two-point conversion to make it 21-8.
Adrian Whitehead scored on a short run and a pass from Jones to cut the deficit to 29-22 early in the fourth quarter, but Excelsior Springs scored late to seal it.
Oak Grove dropped to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the MRVC West.
PIERCE CITY 43, ST. MICHAEL 0: St. Michael the Archangel Catholic couldn’t muster much on offense in a road loss to Pierce City Friday.
The Guardians managed just 53 total yards, including just 3 rushing, to fall to 2-5.
