The Blue Springs South girls swimming and diving team got its dual season off to a strong start Tuesday.
The Jaguars won six events and tallied 699 points to easily outdistance Raymore-Peculiar (512), Grain Valley (457) and Smithville (325) in a four-team meet at the Blue Springs YMCA.
“This was our first dual meet of the season and we had some really nice results,” Jaguars coach Errich Oberlander said. “We have some good depth throughout every class and now it is all about figuring out how it will all come together.”
Anna Zweerink led the way for South, capturing a pair of wins and anchoring the 200-yard freestyle relay victory. Zweerink won the 200-yard freestyle in a state consideration time of 2 minutes, 8.98 seconds, edging teammate Regi Hecker (2:13.01). Zweerink then finished first in the 100 freestyle in a state consideration time of 59.43 seconds.
She teamed with Regi Hecker, Maelyn MacLean and Kennedy Hecker to win the 200 freestyle relay in a state consideration time of 1:46.81.
Hecker took first in the 50 freestyle in 26.25 seconds, while MacLean won the 200 individual medley in 2:29.81, both state consideration times.
Micaela Richards, Amy Pollard, Kennedy Hecker and Whitney Pollard teamed to win the 400 freestyle relay in a state consideration time of 4:14.25, Madelyn Hedrick took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.68) and Kaylee Lombardo was second in diving (213.05) for the Jaguars.
Hayden Meyer earned Grain Valley’s lone victory, winning 1-meter diving with a six-dive score of 213.70. Teammate Piper Barnard was third (201.80).
Rachel Turpin led the Grain Valley swimmers, taking second in the 200 IM (2:31.54) and fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:11.37).
WINNETONKA HOLIDAY INVITATIONAL: Grain Valley captured 16th place in the Winnetonka Holiday Invitational Saturday at Gladstone Community Center.
The Eagles totaled 47 points, while Truman, Van Horn and William Chrisman failed to score. Liberty claimed the team title with 396 points.
Meyer led the Eagles by taking third in diving with an 11-dive score of 324.75. Barnard was seventh at 285.90.
Turpin led the Grain Valley swimmers by taking 11th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:09.12) and 16th in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.43).
The Eagles’ 400 freestyle relay team of Maddie Epple, Ella Boyle, Alyssa Hanenkratt and Turpin finished 12th in 4:31.78.
Kiersten Playter had Chrisman’s top finish, taking 22nd in the 200 IM (2:45.84). Devon Simms had Truman’s top finish, 33rd in the 50 freestyle (29.68).
