The Van Horn wrestling team took on a pair of larger schools and claimed a pair of wins Tuesday.

The Falcons topped host Blue Springs South 44-36 after defeating North Kansas City 54-27. South, in addition to the loss to Van Horn, tied North Kansas City 30-30 but lost 31-30 on a tiebreaker.

Blue Springs South actually held a 6-3 advantage in matches contested on the mat against Van Horn but was hurt by five forfeits.

Caleb Trevino (285) and Steven Campos (132) had pins for Van Horn, and Da’Marcus Penson (145) edged South’s Zander Dombrowski 11-9.

Cooper Boyles (182), Evan Theilen (195), Tommy LaPour (220), Dalton Burner (106), Landon Shoemaker (113) and Trey Greiner (138) each had pins for the Jaguars against Van Horn.

“I liked how the kids came out and competed hard tonight,” Jaguars coach Doug Black said. “I know coming in it would be close and tough to win the duals giving up 30 points per dual with forfeits, but our young guys came out and performed. It is tough to lose a dual when you go 6-3 in matches in the first dual against Van Horn and come up short in team score, but our kids did what they can control and that is individual matches.”

The Falcons took advantage of seven forfeit wins against Northtown. Penson (145) and Chandler Seevers (152) each recorded pins for Van Horn.

South went 1-4 in matches contested against North Kansas City, with Greiner (145) getting a first-period pin for the lone victory. The Hornets won the tiebreaker by winning matches 6-5 with forfeits added.

Alex Noble (113) added a 9-7 decision, Ryan McNeel (126) won by fall and Trey Robinson (138) and Triston Jones (160) each won major decisions to close out the win for the Broncos.

SMITHVILLE 47, GRAIN VALLEY 32: Grain Valley held a 32-29 lead after Trenton Starr (126) won an 18-2 technical fall, but Smithville won the final three matches with a forfeit and two pins to claim the win Tuesday.

Drake Tipton (170), Hunter Newsom (182), Landon Hinton (220) and Dru Azcona (113) each recorded first-period pins – including just nine seconds for Tipton – and Donovan McBride (285) won a 6-4 decision for the Eagles.

BEARS SPLIT: Host William Chrisman topped Raytown South 33-27 but was no match for Belton in a 63-12 loss Tuesday.
