DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR announced a deal with Verizon on Thursday intended to give fans at its 12 racetracks – including Kansas Speedway – better access for their phones and solve a long-simmering headache over dead zones at the sprawling venues.


The deal will improve connectivity at the 12 tracks owned by NASCAR – a problem fans have complained about for years. Even when the top Cup Series was sponsored first by Nextel and then Sprint, cellular service was spotty and often only available to customers of those specific carriers.


Verizon will work with NASCAR to upgrade in-venue wireless communication service over the next three years. Verizon becomes the official wireless and 5G partner for the stock car racing series and the wi-fi partner at the 12 tracks, which host 19 of the 36 Cup Series races: Kansas, Auto Club Speedway in Fontana (Calif.); Chicagloand in Joliet (Ill.); Darlington (S.C.); Daytona (Fla.); Homestead-Miami; Martinsville (Va.); Michigan (Brooklyn, Mich.); ISM Raceway near Phoenix; Richmond (Va.), Talladega (Ala.) and Watkins Glen (N.Y.).


Eleven tracks not owned by NASCAR also host Cup Series races. It will be up to their promoters to decide if a similar upgrade will be taken.


Craig Neeb, executive vice president and chief innovation officer for NASCAR, would not disclose the cost of the project. He said a renovation completed prior to last season at Phoenix Raceway included a "full investment not only from a cellular standpoint but the wireless infrastructure" and the fan feedback proved it was a worthy investment.


"All of us in a normal daily course of life use our phones all day and when you don't have the wireless access, the fan experience did suffer," Neeb said.


Modernizing the 12 tracks is a long-term project because of the size of the properties.


"Unlike NBA or another sport, a NASCAR venue is a humongous infrastructure, it takes a lot to get it right," said Vickie Lonker, vice president of product management at Verizon Business.


Neeb said NASCAR is the first track operator to take the step but hopes others will follow.


"We felt we could lead on this effort and if we can pave the way for others, even better," he said.


NEW CUP NAME: The trophy awarded to NASCAR's champion will be called the Bill France Cup beginning this season.


The renaming is a tribute to Bill France Sr, who founded NASCAR in 1947, as well as his son, Bill France Jr., who elevated the sport to national prominence as chairman from 1972 to 2003.


"As the sport ushers in a new era, it's fitting that my father's name is associated with the highest mark of excellence in our sport," said Jim France, NASCAR chairman and CEO. "My father and brother's vision for NASCAR has been realized, many times over, as millions of fans follow and engage each week with the best racing in the world."


The Bill France Cup was created by Jostens and maintains the size and shape of last year's championship trophy. It features outlines of the 24 NASCAR Cup Series racetracks that comprise the 2020 schedule.


The trophy design will be updated as the race schedule changes and new tracks become part of the Cup Series schedule.
