Oak Grove kept eight of its nine wrestlers alive after the first two rounds of the Class 2 Missouri State High School Wrestling Championships.


The Panthers went 6-3 in the opening round, and two of the three who lost in the first round bounced back with wins in the first round of wrestlebacks on opening day Thursday morning at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.


Kaden Scarborough (113 pounds), Carson Smith (138), Anthony Erickson (145) and Adrian Whitehead (160) all earned bonus points by pinning their opponents in the first round to advance to the quarterfinals Friday morning. Caleb Groff (285) won an 8-0 major decision and Zander Brinegar (195) prevailed with a 14-7 decision.


Brody Armstrong (152) suffered a 5-2 loss in his first-round match but bounced back with a 2-1 win in wrestlebacks. Garrett Hudspeth also kept himself alive with a 3-2 win after being pinned in the second period of his first-round match.


Chayton Kellum dropped a 17-2 technical fall in his opener. He then battled through six overtimes in wrestlebacks before being eliminated with a reversal and near fall.
