The newest sports team in Independence’s arena is still planning on having a season this year. But don’t blink – you might miss it.
The Kansas City Force – the newest member of the all-women Extreme Football League – will play two games, one home and one away, according to the revised schedule posted on the league’s website.
The Force will make its debut 7 p.m. June 27 against the Los Angeles Black Storm at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena (soon to be renamed Cable-Dahmer Arena). Their next and last game will be Aug. 15 at the Seattle Thunder.
Mitchell Mortaza, the managing partner for the Force, said the eight-team league, also known as the X League, pushed back its schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Force was originally set to debut at home May 8 against the Omaha Red Devils.
The original schedule had each team playing four games – two home and two away. Now each will play two between June 20 and the X Cup league championship on Sept. 12.
Mark White will serve as the head coach for the Force, which held player tryouts in January at the Blue Springs Fieldhouse. Each team has a 20-player roster that will be announced next week.
"We are just now entering the KC market," Mortaza said in an email. "We expect a strong response because obviously KC is a great football city with passionate fans."
