The ruby-throated hummingbird
George Owens Nature Park, 1601 S. Speck Road in Independence, is home to a flock of newly hatched ruby-throated hummingbirds, along with their parents. Staff has installed more than 50 hummingbird feeders to allow visitors to walk around the grounds, watching the hummingbirds and remaining socially distanced. The staff has been banding the 2020 babies and tracking the population this summer. They can even tell which of the 2020 babies are young males by one single red feather on the tiny males’ throats. The grounds at George Owens are open from 8:30 a.m. through 8 p.m Tuesday through Friday; 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.
