Suspect held in Independence homicide

Independence Police have identified the victim of Monday’s shooting at a convenience store as 17-year-old SirJohn Harris of Lee’s Summit.

Police said a second person wounded in the shooting has been released from the hospital and is now in custody, and the case remains under investigation.

The shooting happened shortly after 1 a.m. Monday, police said, in the 7-Eleven parking lot off U.S. 40 in southwest Independence near Crysler Avenue, and officers found two people had been shot. Harris was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to his Facebook profile, Harris attended Lee’s Summit High School.

With the 7-Eleven shooting, along with a fatal domestic violence incident a few hours earlier, the city has had eight homicides this year.
