A moment of remembrance

To mark the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Independence Japanese Sister City Committee hosted two bell ringings last Wednesday afternoon and Saturday evening at the UN Peace Plaza across from the Community of Christ Auditorium. The group rang individual bells for several seconds at 6:15 p.m. Aug. 5 and 9:02 p.m. Aug. 8, marking the exact times (Japan being one day ahead) the bombs were dropped. People were invited to participate virtually at those times and post to sister city social media pages. Independence and Higashimurayama, Japan have been sister cities for 42 years.
