William Louis Mauer, Sr., 89 of Independence, Mo. passed away Thursday, December 15, 2022, at his residence. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 600 N. Liberty St., Independence, MO 64050. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Leavenworth National Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Donations may be made in his name to the Wounded Warrior Project. William was born March 16, 1933, in Salina, Kan. to Alfred and Nell Catherine Mauer. He grew up in Kansas City and graduated from Lillis Catholic High School. He proudly serviced in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict and retired after achieving the rank of sergeant major from the Marines after 20 years. He worked for Case/IH plant in Fairfax, Kan. for 30 years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and lifetime member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Jeanne of the home; a son, William L. “Bill” Mauer, Jr. and wife Renee of Leawood, Kan. and two grandchildren, Will and Cole.
