Recap of area high school baseball games for Saturday, April 25
A big seventh-inning rally kept Van Horn’s baseball team unbeaten and gave the Falcons the South Kansas City Classic title.
Trailing 16-11 entering the seventh, the Falcons scored six runs in the bottom of the inning to grab a 17-16 win over Ruskin for the title.
Aaron Driskell’s two-run double tied the game. An error brought home the winning run.
“It was a pretty exciting finish,” Falcons coach Tim Wilson said. “It was good the kids didn’t give up. They kept battling. We got a couple of clutch hits at the end. It was pretty exciting.”
Driskell ended with two hits and four RBIs. Phil Hammonds added a pair of hits for the Falcons (8-0).
GRAIN VALLEY WINS TWO: David Richards shook off a tough game and helped Grain Valley close the Boonville Wood Bat Classic with a pair of wins Saturday.
Richards homered in both games – giving him four for the week and seven for the season – as the Eagles (11-3) beat host Boonville 8-3 and Centralia 11-1.
“We were disappointed about (losing) Friday,” Eagles coach Mark Lyford said. “We had chances to win. We came back against Boonville, who was playing pretty well. That was a solid win. We swung the bats really well all day. Friday, we had a lot of missed opportunities. Saturday, we capitalized on most of our opportunities.”
Austin Gouldsmith had five hits and three RBIs on the day. Jordan Oddo had a pair of hits against Boonville, while David Duncan added two hits and three RBIs against Centralia.
BLUE SPRINGS SOUTH 4, BLUE VALLEY (KAN.) WEST 0: Six shutout innings by Danny McMurtrey helped the Jaguars pick up a road win Saturday.
“McMurtrey took the mound for the first time in his varsity career and gave up two hits and struck out eight,” South coach Ben Baier said. “We knew he was capable of throwing for us this year, and it was nice to see him get a chance to show what he can do, especially against a team like Blue Valley West."
Nick Gast went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Stuart Pudenz also added three hits for the Jaguars.
All four South runs came in the top of the seventh inning.
