Harold M. “Milton” Shaw, 88, of Independence, Mo., went home to the Lord on Saturday, March 24, 2012.

Throughout life, friends and family all knew him as Milton. He was born in Excelsior Springs on September 11, 1923, to Elmer and Blanche Shaw, and was a lifelong resident of the Kansas City area.  He graduated from Manual High School, then joined the U.S. Navy after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Milton served as a submarine radio operator on the USS Flying Fish in the Pacific for the duration of World War II. He was a mechanic by training and his career included work at a family business, Sheffield/Armco Steel, and finally a regional trucking company. After retiring as a shop supervisor, Milton enjoyed travel and woodworking. Milton was a quiet, reserved family man. He was happiest when taking on a new project, and never accepted anything short of perfection in his work. He was usually humming or whistling a tune from the ’40s while puttering around the house. He enjoyed bowling and you could never beat him at checkers! He was a man of his word that you could always rely on.

Among those who will miss him in this life are his wife of 70 years, Belle; his children, Harold M. and Mary Shaw, Dale and Jodi Shaw and Connie Van Fleet; his grandchildren, David Shaw, Michelle and Tom Farkas, Jessica Shaw and Chuck Hansuld, and Kristina Frye; his great-grandchildren, Kayce Frye, Katie Frye and Wyatt Farkas; and his brothers, Orville Shaw and Leroy Shaw.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, at the Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence. Interment at Mount Washington Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. before the service at the chapel.
