Blue Springs fought tooth and nail with Lee’s Summit West in the final round of the Tiger/Bronco/Titan Invitational’s Titan Division.

Despite the gritty effort, the Wildcats were blanked 3-0 Thursday at Lee’s Summit West and fell to 0-3 on the season after its third loss of the tournament.

“We have 12 players right now,” said Blue Springs assistant coach Mike Palermo, who filled in while head coach Doug McLagan handles personal business out of town. “We have injuries. We came out tonight not worried about a scoreboard. We came out tonight and showed a little bit of pride and effort. We came to play 80 minutes of soccer.”

Searching for an offensive spark, Palermo moved Examiner All-Area first-team defender Bailey Hensley from the back end to forward to hasten the Wildcats’ attack. The move didn’t produce a goal, but expect Hensley to play a good amount of offense this season.

“She is truly our leader,” Palermo said. “She did a wonderful job out there tonight.”

For her part, Hensley didn’t mind the move from the back end.

“We talked about it and first half, I knew I was going to play defense,” she said. “I came out and played more defense than I thought, and that’s how I thought I’d end the game but then he moved me up front.”

The Wildcats and Titans played a scoreless first half before Lee’s Summit West struck in the 32nd minute, followed by a goal in the 62nd and 79th minutes. Despite giving up three goals, Wildcats goalkeeper Alyssa Scholl had moments of brilliance in front of the net by stopping dead-on shots off the feet of Titans players.

“It probably would have been 5-0 in the first half if it wasn’t for Alyssa,” Palermo said. “She kept us in it. She made some great one-on-one saves.”

Said Bailey of her teammate: “I would not want to play in front of anyone else. I love Alyssa. She’s a great leader and communicator, and that helps us out. We know we can trust her. She made some amazing one-on-one saves tonight.”
