Three Kansas City men are in custody for an alleged burglary and kidnapping on April 20 in Independence.

Derrick B. Caldwell, DeAndre Gipson, Robert M. Taylor were all charged with two counts first-degree attempted armed robbery; one count first-degree burglary; four counts of armed criminal action and two counts of kidnapping-facilitating (a felony)-inflicting injury-terrorizing.

Independence police said officers were dispatched to a home in the 1400 block of East 35th Street at about 3:45 p.m. The woman told police there was a burglary in progress and said a man had her children tied up and had a gun and was demanding money.

Upon arrival, police set up a perimeter, and a neighbor notified police that two men fled from the back of the home on foot.

Running east on Phelps Avenue and then south on Crane, the two men eventually jumped inside a Chevy Impala, according to police. They started down a dead-end road and stopped, at which point one of the men jumped out of the car and ran, throwing a handgun on the ground.

Police then took all three men into custody.

Caldwell is being held on a $750,000 secured bond, and DeAndre and Taylor are being held on a $500,000 secured bond.

Police are still investigating.
