The Inter City Fire Protection District’s annual Boot Block has been postponed because of the Joplin disaster.

Since the early 1970s, the fire district has conducted an annual boot block at the intersection of Interstate 435 and Truman Road, the proceeds from which are used to purchase needed equipment and supplies for our volunteer firefighting efforts in the Blue Summit community.

Fire Chief Jeff Jewell announced this week that the 2011 Boot Block is postponed until a more appropriate time, in consideration for and concern for the disaster victims in Joplin, Mo.

“We would not want to mislead people who might think they are making a contribution to the Joplin Emergency Fund, and we don’t want to do anything that might impede the public from supporting that very vital work that is going on there,” Jewell said in a release.

“There were two fire district buildings damaged in the tornado, and they need all the help they can get.”

A five-man crew and a rescue vehicle from Inter City is on stand by to be deployed to Joplin as needed.

“We are ready to do whatever we can to help with the recovery efforts for our fellow firefighters and neighbor city,” Jewell said.

The ICFPD will host its Boot Block at a later date. For now, everyone is encouraged to make contributions first to the people of Joplin.
