“Wild About Harry” will be held Thursday, April 23 to the Muehlbach Marriott Hotel in Kansas City.
The annual fundraising event benefitting the Truman Library Institute is a perennial favorite with the philanthropic set and never fails to entertain and educate capacity crowds. Owning the credit for attracting such stars of entertainment, politics and media as the late actor James Whitmore, political cartoonist Pat Oliphant, author and commentator Doris Kearns Goodwin and veteran anchorman Tom Brokaw, “Wild About Harry” builds on its reputation for excellence this year with featured guest Cokie Roberts.
Roberts, the co-host of ABC’s “This Week with Sam Donaldson and Cokie Roberts” from 1996 to 2002, has had a front row seat to national politics for more than 20 years as a political correspondent for ABC and National Public Radio. A 40-year veteran of broadcast journalism, Roberts is a member of the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame and was cited by the American Women in Radio and Television as one of the 50 greatest women in the history of broadcasting. With an eye toward the role of women in the formation of the country, Roberts has written best-selling books including “Founding Mothers and Ladies of Liberty.”
As the Truman Presidential Library and Museum prepares for the celebration of President Truman’s 125th birthday in May, the fundraising event will toast the Man from Independence and his unlikely rise through local politics to the nation’s highest elected office. The everlasting appeal of Harry Truman provides limitless inspiration and each year the “Wild About Harry” planning committee invents new ways to appreciate and admire Independence’s most famous resident.
Leading this year’s celebration is Mary Shaw “Shawsie” Branton, an intimate friend of the late Margaret Truman Daniel, and her daughter Page Branton Reed.
The dynamic mother-daughter team is recognized throughout Kansas City and Eastern Jackson County for their dedication to a multitude of worthwhile philanthropic efforts. Serving as Honorary Chairs are Adele and Don Hall who have generously and enthusiastically spearheaded this year’s sponsorship solicitation effort.
The festivities will kick off at 5:30 p.m. with an exclusive sponsors’ reception followed by a social hour beginning at 6:15 p.m. Dinner will commence at 7 p.m. with the evening’s keynote address to follow.
Individual tickets are priced at $150 with sponsorship opportunities beginning at $1,000. All sponsorship packages include an invitation to the private reception with Cokie Roberts, preferred seating, and acknowledgement in the event program.
