The Grain Valley boys and girls track teams both finished second at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational on Thursday in Harrisonville.

The boys finished second with a team score of 114.50. Smithville finished first with 131 points.

The boys were led by two first-place finishes. Tyree Meadows won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:04.98. The Eagles also won the 4x100-meter relay. Grain Valley took second in eight events as well.

“Overall I was very pleased with our performance,” Eagles coach Marc Cleveland said. “It was a pretty chilly night and my biggest concern was for the kids to come out of it healthy and gain a little experience. For the most part we accomplished both”

The girls had one first-place finish. Megan Yates won the shot put with a throw of 31-0.

The Eagles placed second in six other events.

“The girls did an outstanding job coming out and competing at this first meet,” girls coach Cris Byington said. “They showed a lot of determination all-around in the events. We were very pleased with the results especially with the cold weather. We have a lot of young athletes with high expectations after last night.”
