Mary E. Jelinek, 80, of Independence, Mo., died on Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at the Independence Manor Care Center.

Mary E. Jelinek, 80, of Independence, Mo., died on Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at the Independence Manor Care Center.

Mary was born on November 19, 1931, in Henrietta, Mo., to Arther and Clara B. (Mason) Sullenger. She married Joseph W. “Joe” Jelinek Sr. of Ray County, Mo., on April 9, 1950; he preceded her in death on May 19, 2009. Mary worked for Cigna Health Insurance as a typist for many years. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Independence. She had lived most of her life in Independence. Mary was a 50+ year member of the Order of Eastern Star. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by one brother, Keith Sullenger, and one sister, Clara Belle Sullenger.

Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Joseph W. “Joey” Jelinek Jr. of Independence, and Gary Gene and Tonja Jelinek of Independence; one brother and sister-in-law, Don and Judy Sullenger of Centerville, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 31, at 2 p.m. at the Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, Mo. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, where an O.E.S. service will be held at 1:45 p.m. Burial will be in the Richmond Memory Gardens Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
