The State Emergency Management Agency says those wanting to make donations to help the victims of Sunday’s davastating tornado in Joplin, Mo., can go to www.sema.dps.mo.gov/recover/donations.asp.
Much of the city was devastated by Sunday’s strong tornado, and reports say at least 89 people were killed. Gov. Jay Nixon has activated the Missouri National Guard, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol has sent additional troopers to the area. Local emergency response agencies across the state also are sending personnel and equipment.

The Greater Ozarks Chapter of the Red Cross has opened a shelter at the Leggett and Platt Athletic Center at Missouri Southern State College, 3950 E. Newman Road in Joplin.
Those who need disaster information, shelter information or referrals are urged to call 2-1-1, the United Way service number is available in most areas in Missouri. In areas where the 211 number is not operational, citizens can call 800-427-4626.
The Living Waters Family Worship Center in Buckner is collecting items to take to Joplin, including blankets, sheets, pillows, clothing in all sizes, toiletries, laundry supplies, diapers, wipes, formula, bottled water, first aid supplies and non-perishable food items. The drop-off location is 202 S. Osage in Buckner. Items will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. today, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. To support the American Red Cross disaster relief, people may text “REDCROSS” to 9099 to make a $10 donation or by calling 800-733-2767. Donations may be mailed to the Greater Kansas City Chapter, 211 W. Armour Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. 64114.
To support The Salvation Army disaster relief efforts, people may text “JOPLIN” to 80888 for an automatic $10 donation. They also may call 800-725-2769 or visit www.salvationarmy.us. Donations may be mailed to The Salvation Army, 3637 Broadway, Kansas City, MO 64111.
