A man is facing possibly five years in prison after pleading guilty to child molestation.
Robin Knight, 47, pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree child molestation on Oct. 9 in Jackson County Circuit Court.
Knight awaits sentencing from circuit judge Michael Manners on Jan. 15. Manners will decide if Knight should spend five years in prison or serve 120 days “shock incarceration” where he would go through a treatment program and be released if he successfully passes the program.
The plea agreement allows for a five-year sentence on each molestation count. But the plea calls for both counts to run concurrent to each other, meaning Knight will spend no more than five years in jail, if that’s what Manners decides, said James R. Hobbs, Knight’s attorney.
Hobbs said Jackson County prosecutors agreed to seek no more than five years.
Hobbs will be unable to ask the judge for probation at the sentencing, according to the plea agreement.
The attorney, based in Kansas City, did not comment further about the case, citing the pending sentencing hearing.
Knight, whom court documents give a Lee’s Summit address,  was released on $200,000 bond, Hobbs said, who declined to indicate where Knight is living.
Prosecutors originally charged Knight with three counts of statutory sodomy, three counts of first-degree child molestation, two counts of sexual misconduct and one count each of possession of child pornography and statutory rape.
Those charges disappeared because of the plea bargain.
The abuse happened in August 2007 at a residence in Independence.
Court records give the following account of the crime:
On March 17, 2008, a guardian of the alleged underage victims discovered possible child pornography on the computer the person shared with Knight in a home in Independence. Knight was living with the person.
The guardian contacted police. A detective found out through the victims that Knight was touching himself while pornography was playing on the TV and the computer depicted children engaging in sexual activities.
Knight is also accused of touching the victims inappropriately in a sexual manner, and having sexual intercourse with at least one of the victims.
The detective interviewed Knight after he was arrested. He denied the allegations and said he had not looked at any child pornography.
Police obtained a search warrant for the computer and a digital camera that also may have depicted possible child porn.
Crime scene investigators responded to scene of where the incidents may have happened. They collected bedding from the alleged victim’s bedroom. The bedding, according to the guardian, had not been washed after the supposed incident.
