The Grain Valley boys tennis team is no longer undefeated.
Two doubles wins weren’t enough as the Eagles fell 5-4 to host Marshall in a non-conference dual match Tuesday.
“I was real proud of our guys,” Grain Valley coach Randy Draper said after his team dropped to 2-1. “They played really well. Our doubles teams played excellent.
“Michael (Draper, the coach’s son) had a big win in No. 1 singles. It’s the first time, boys or girls, we’ve beaten Marshall in No. 1 singles. It was a heck of a victory for him. Our doubles teams are dynamite.”
Michael Draper edged Marshall’s Mac Evans 8-6 in the No. 1 match.
Colin Chastain posted the other Grain Valley singles win. Doubles winners were the teams of Derek Bowlin and Ryan Marrs and Jake Pugh and Dillon Perdue.
Marshall notched a 6-2 junior varsity win.
OAK PARK 9, WILLIAM CHRISMAN 0: The Suburban Big Six opener for William Chrisman resulted in a loss at Oak Park.
But the Bears’ top two players performed well. McKay Paialii suffered a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) loss and Ben Bertram fell 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in singles play.
In doubles play, the duo was edged 10-7.
“McKay and Ben played extremely well,” Chrisman coach Nathan Mooney said. “It probably was McKay’s best match ever. He came close to winning the tiebreaker and forcing a third set.
“Ben played very well, coming back from the first-set loss. He couldn’t put the third set away. In doubles, they played with them (Oak Park). They were up in part of the match. Oak Park was able to put it away a little bit more than our guys.”
Chrisman fell to 2-1 overall after opening with two non-conference wins last week.
Oak Park was a 9-0 junior varsity winner.
