Ready for the big day of shopping? You know, Blue Friday?

Yes, the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce has declared Friday as Blue Friday and the beginning of Buy Blue Springs Week.

“The whole point of it is to think about spending in Blue Springs,” chamber President Lara Vermillion says.

The chamber is selling $10 and $25 Visa gift cards – blue, of course, with a mascot and the message “because next door means more.” Some companies have bought for employees. Call 816-229-8558.

The city has enjoyed a significant growth in the number of retailers in recent years, and the chamber is trying to suggest that if you’re going to shop at a chain store, why not shop at the one nearby.

“Any time we can remind people is a good thing,” Vermillion says.

Bioscience jobs

The Ennovation Center in Independence will soon have another tenant, this time in a lab setting, with the promise of creating local jobs.

Androjek, a company that provides screening and diagnostics for male human and animal infertility, plans to move its corporate headquarters to the center in early 2012. The company, founded three years ago, is moving here from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The company says it eventually plans to hire 18 new employees. Among other things, the Ennovation Center – converted from the old Independence Regional Health Center – has biotech incubator space. Old surgical suites on the second floor have been altered for biotech firms. Androjek is first such tenant.
