This was the moment the Missouri Mavericks have been waiting for.
The Mavericks scored six unanswered goals – including a goal and two assists from player/assistant coach Jeff Christian – to claim the first win in the new Central Hockey League franchise’s history, a 6-1 decision over the Wichita Thunder Friday night.
“We’re happy tonight to get on the board,” said Brent Thiessen, the Mavericks’ president and general manager. “The guys have worked extremely hard and (head coach) Scott (Hillman) has done a great job of preparing the team.  This is great for us and great for City of Independence as we march toward opening our beautiful new building on Nov. 13 and 14.”
Hillman said most of the credit went to his goalkeeper, Doug Groenestege.
“It all starts with the goalie and Doug Groenestege was our best player tonight,” Hillman.  “To kill that many penalties without allowing a goal was a great accomplishment for our team.  Both of our new players (Blake Cosgrove and Brett Hammond) were also a big part of the victory.”
Trailing 1-0, Andrew Davis scored at the 9:55 mark of the first period to start the scoring spree for the Mavericks (1-5-0).
Bill Vandermeer then snuck in a backhand wrap-around goal at 11:48 to put Missouri ahead for good.
Christian scored the lone second-period goal for a 3-1 lead.
Hammond, Chad Hinz and Simon Watson added goals in the final period to put it out of reach.
Groenestege and the defense made a strong statement, killing all nine of Wichita’s power-play opportunities.
Groenestege (1-2-0) stopped 25 of Wichita’s 26 shots.
