The city of Independence wants its citizens to turn on their porch lights and head up to the Square on Aug. 7.

The city of Independence wants its citizens to turn on their porch lights and head up to the Square on Aug. 7.


That is where activities and demonstrations will take place in honor of the 29th annual National Night Out Against Crime. The overall program, which will include an estimated 37 million participants, is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch.


From 5 to 8 p.m. in the Pharaoh Theatre parking lot, residents can enjoy free food, raffle giveaways and demonstrations from the Police Department’s K-9, Traffic Safety and Special Response Team units. Police officials also will distribute crime prevention literature related to current crime trends across Independence.
