Come this week, a first critical step in the new fire station for Sni Valley Fire Protection District will be complete.

Located across the street from the current station in Oak Grove, the new facility will be mostly the same size, though its chief said the truck bays will be a little longer.

Chief John VanGorkom said the district passed a bond levy for its construction in 2008. He said the building should be ready for full occupancy within two months or so.

“We’ve been in the same building for about 30 years, so there was a need for it,” VanGorkom said.

The district covers approximately 68 miles. Based in Oak Grove, there are 21 paid firefighters and 10 active volunteers.

Beyond the new building, VanGorkom said the district has no plans for other additions and/or improvements. He said any kind of tax issue in the future would most likely be a levy, but he doesn’t see that happening soon.

“Right now is not the best time to ask for money.”

Voters on Tuesday will be asked to choose among four candidates for two open seats on the board of directors. The candidates are Robert P. Shores (incumbent), Jerry H. Hoy, Roger Lake (incumbent), and Sam A. Russell.
