Ryan Nichols, 14, is a member of Boy Scout Troop 58 in Blue Springs. He recently received his Amateur Radio Technician class license as a result of an Amateur Radio Field Day in Raytown last month.
1 Why did you decide to join Boy Scouts?
I have been in Boys Scouts for four years. I was involved when I lived in Michigan and decided to continue when we moved to Blue Springs. It was something I wanted to get back into because it is a lot of fun.
2 What have you learned through the organization?
How to camp. I really didn’t do much camping before, and now I go every month. I really enjoy camping. It is kind of like a sleep over, but outside.
3 Why did you decide to earn your Amateur Radio Technician class license after a recent Boy Scout camping event?
I thought it would be cool because you get to talk to people all over the world. I haven’t done much yet, but during our field day, we talked to someone in Canada. That was really cool.
4 Why is it a hobby that you have become interested in doing?
I might not be the most talkative person, but I like to listen to people. It is interesting to listen to people from different parts of the country and in other places.
5 How has being involved in Boy Scouts helped you in other aspects of your life?
I think it has made me more confident. I don’t know that I would have gone to get my amateur radio license if it was not for being in Boy Scouts.
