Jake Owen will be playing at Whiskey Tango at 10 p.m. Friday in Grain Valley (Doors open at 5:30, with opening band Echo Creek starting around 7). Owen’s venture into country music has not been a casual walk in the park, but an outright sprint from 2006 to now with a record deal with RCA, a successful first release, “Startin With Me” and his second CD, “Easy Does It.” He has toured with a long list of superstars and garnered his first Grammy, Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association nominations. His current single is “Eight Second Ride.”

1  Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, all or none? What are your feelings on all this new fangled way of mingling with your fans?

I really like Twitter. I think it’s a cool way for my fans and I to go on this crazy ride together. I always like getting their responses to stuff that I’m doing.

2 The Examiner covers the Independence, Blue Springs and Grain Valley area in Eastern Jackson County – east of Kansas City. We boast David Cook, “American Idol” winner for 2008 as a resident (he grew up in Blue Springs). A winner of “American Idol” living in your backyard is something to take note of for people in this area. How does your hometown relate to you being a famous musician and what is it like to go home?

I love going home. There is a song on my album called “Every reason I Go Back” and that sums up exactly how I feel about the place. I love getting back to Vero Beach, Fla., as much as I can.

3 The state of Missouri boasts many country music artists, and many formed the backbone of country music, including Porter Wagoner. What artists do you look up to and admire that paved the way for your generation?

I’m a huge fan of Vern Gosdin, Merle Haggard, and Waylon Jennings. They certainly know how to sing for the women in the audience, but also had songs that the guys could relate to. I hope that my music feels the same way.

4 Around Independence, Blue Springs and Grain Valley there are many things to do including visiting several great lakes and parks. When people need to unwind, they don’t have to look far in this area. What do you do in your down time to unwind or when you have a bit of time off on the road?

I bought a boat this year and I love to take it down the lake with some friends and wakeboard and just relax. I like to do anything outside.

5 No one challenges the fact that the Kansas City area is known for great BBQ, but the best BBQ is always a matter of hometown opinion. If you are a Texan, it is Texas BBQ.  If you hail from Tennessee it is Memphis BBQ.  We’d love to hear your opinion on the best BBQ?

There is a place in Nashville called “Arnolds” that serves up some pretty mean BBQ. I am also a big fan of their banana pudding though, ha ha. I like all BBQ. I hope to try some when I get to Kansas City
