The Sugar Creek Board of Aldermen met Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at City Hall, 103 S. Sterling, and took the following action. All actions were unanimous unless otherwise noted.

• Approved an ordinance authorizing the city to increase water rates for residential and commercial/industrial users in the city. In addition to increasing the water rate, the commodity charge will be increased from $1.95 per 1,000 gallons to $2.76 per 1,000 gallons. The increase is in accordance with the city of Independence’s decision to raise its rates 9 percent beginning October 1.


• Approved the preliminary and final plan for phase 1A of lot 3 of The Bluffs at Sugar Creek, a residential development in the northwestern part of the city. Lot 3 includes the new police and fire building. The city has a 99-year lease agreement for the property with BP/Amoco.


• Approved an ordinance providing for a municipal general election to be held in the city on Tuesday, April 7.


• Approved an amendment relating to court costs providing for a $2 surcharge for the Inmate Security Fund, which benefits shelters for battered persons including Hope House. According to City Attorney Bob Buckley, the amendment comes from a state statute that was passed four years ago.
