Pioneer Ridge Middle School in Independence was named as a first-place winner in Heartland Utilities for Energy Efficiency’s “Secure Energy Future” video contest.

Children in grades 6-8 in the Kansas City area were encouraged to create 60-second public service announcements promoting energy efficiency. Six area middle schools were selected to receive grant money for their participation.

As a first-place winner, Pioneer Ridge will receive $3,000. It was the only area school to win an award.

Students were to create a PSA covering one of the following areas – how energy is being used and where/how it can be conserved (at school and/or home); energy wasting habits or appliances (at school and/or home) and how to correct those habits; and energy conservation alternatives (at school and/or home).
