Barbara Draper  died March 26, 2009

Barbara Draper, 73, of Independence, formerly of Brookfield, died Thursday, March 26, 2009 at her home.

A funeral service was held Monday, March 30, at 2 p.m. at Wright-Baker-Hill Funeral Home in Brookfield with Rev. Brooke Taylor officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Brookfield. Visitation was Monday at 9 a.m. and the family received friends from 1 p.m. until service time.

Barbara Jean, daughter of Ivan H. and Mildred J. (Walden) Helms, was born September 7, 1935 in Brookfield. On January 30, 1952, she married Donald W. Thomas who preceded her in death on November 26, 1977. On June 29, 1979, she married Jerry L. Draper of Independence. Mrs. Draper worked for the City of Independence as a wastewater treatment operator until her retirement. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Independence. She was an avid gardener carefully tending to her flowers. Barbara, along with her mother and sister spent many years making and donating quilts to the women’s shelter.

Her parents; an infant sister, Joyce; and son, J. Scott Draper who died November 15, 1989 preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry of the home; her children, Toni Jacobs and husband Lindell of Marceline, Brenda Darby and husband Danny of Independence, Steve Thomas and wife Robin of Holt, Emalee Sexson and husband Rick, of Independence; ten grandchildren, Laura Darby, Christian Ellis, Rachel Pederson, Jennifer Ellis, Amy Jacobs, Sara Jacobs, Stevanie Thomas, Tyler Sexson, Hanah Thomas, and Andy Sexson; ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Ted Helms and wife Juanita of Easley, South Carolina; one sister, Sheila Hammond and husband Wally of Lees Summit.
