An employee at Mount Washington Elementary is being investigated by the Independence Police Department as well as the U.S. Department of Education.
With only weeks to go before the transition of seven schools into the Independence School District is complete, an employee at one of the western Independence schools is being investigated by local and federal authorities.
Tom Gentry, public information officer for the Independence Police Department, said a joint investigation by the Independence Police Department and the U.S. Department of Education is being conducted. The investigation is in regard to the alleged misappropriation of funds by an employee of the Kansas City School District who works at Mount Washington Elementary.
Although few details are available , Gentry said Independence detectives have a "person of interest" and the misappropriation involves thousands of state and federal dollars.
"We received a call from an employee of the Kansas City School District May 9 who wanted to report some suspicions," he said. "That is when we got invovled with the case."
Gentry said it is difficult to say exactly how much money is involved and where the funds have gone. He said the Police Department is following up on several leads and looking at a paper trail.
