Animals Best Friends and the People for Animal Welfare Society want to cordially invite you to come to the Powerhouse Theatre, inside the Roger T. Sermon Community Center at the corner of Truman and Noland roads, Independence, Thursday evening. Dave and Connie Mayta are producing the play “Chain of Circumstances” performed by the City Theatre of Independence as a benefit for PAWS and ABF. This suspense-filled play will keep you glued to the edge of your seat.

Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the door, or you may call 816-836-4866.

There will be a reception before the play beginning at 7 p.m. in the foyer. Hor d’oeuvres will be served. PAWS and ABF will also have shirts, magnets and bumper stickers available for sale during the reception. The play will begin at 8 p.m.

ABF is fortunate to have friends such as Dave and Connie Mayta, who are officers of PAWS. Founded in 1973, PAWS is a nonprofit organization that offers a reduced cost spay/neuter program to residents of greater Kansas City. PAWS works with area veterinarians to provide lower cost spay/neuter surgeries for pet owners who cannot afford traditional veterinary fees.

PAWS has counselors who talk to people about regular veterinary care and work to educate pet owners on the importance of preventive veterinary visits. As of Sept. 30, PAWS has provided financial assistance to alter 1,754 animals. At the rate dogs and cats procreate, this amounts to thousands of lives saved.

Basically, PAWS and ABF work hand in hand toward the same goal – to minimize the homeless pet population. PAWS works to prevent the births of unwanted puppies and kittens; ABF works to rescue and place unwanted dogs and cats into forever homes. Together with other animal groups we work to achieve a humane society where animals are no longer euthanized just because they have no place to call home.

We appreciate your support and hope you will come and join us for an evening of good food, conversation and suspense.

Speaking of PAWS, Animals Best Friends will have an entry in the 2009 Independence Chamber of Commerce Halloween Parade on Saturday. We are doing our version of the “The Wizard of Oz.” Our entry “The Wizard of PAWZ” will feature characters from the movie and several of our kids will be walking donned in costumes. We hope everyone will come and see us and help us with our message for our homeless kids: “There is no place like home.”

The Animals Best Friends wish list includes dog chow, dog biscuits, rawhides, cow hooves, canned dog and cat food, laundry soap, bleach, Fantastic cleaning spray, paper towels and newspapers. There is a paper recycling bin in the parking lot at ABF Headquarters, 2302 S. Crysler Ave., Independence. Please, no cardboard or telephone books. We appreciate your support.
