It’s that time of year again. Halloween. Yeah! We love Halloween at our house, and in our neighborhood. When I was a kid, my mom was the best at helping us make our homemade costumes. No mega spooky stores then. I traditionally make this week’s column up from a kit. Literally. I want to let you know that it doesn’t take much, to “make-up” a great costume this ghoulish night. This year, I turned my 9-year-old into a Zombie:

Pre-zombie
Put on whatever shirt your zombie is going to wear for the costume. You don’t want to have to try to get a shirt over makeup.

Base makeup
White or light gray will do. The kit we bought from Walgreen’s had one that was not greasy. I like that. Apply it all over the face, eyelids, lips, and blend down the neck and onto ears.

Contouring
Next use black makeup to contour along the cheekbones, forehead, around the eyes, lips and sides of the mouth to begin creating a hallowed look. Blend, blend, blend.

Accent with
purple or blue
Follow underneath the black with a bit of purple or blue makeup and blend very well. This is what start to really give the look of the undead!

Add a scar and blood
The kit included some “skin” that was like putty with stringy stuff in it. I molded it a bit and applied it to the cheekbone. Then I dabbed just a tiny bit of makeup over it. White on the top and black around the edges. Dropped some blood around the mouth for that “freshly eaten” effect!
Well, there you have it! Add some fake blood to an old shirt and your zombie is complete. Cheap, fast, simple and awesome! Speaking of awesome, a special thanks to my model, Nate Schwaller! Your the best zombie boy ever – and you made me type that... Have a safe, fun Halloween and a beautiful day!
