Man had been put on probation for statutory sodomy

An Independence man was nearly two weeks into serving supervised probation for a sex crime when a train struck and killed him early Wednesday.

A judge on March 13 sentenced 45-year-old Timothy E. Long to three years probation after he pleaded guilty to first-degree statutory sodomy with a child under age 14.

The judge made Long register as a sex offender and ordered him to have no unsupervised contact with anyone under age 17 or with the victim. Also, he had to enter and successfully complete a crime impact class.

Independence police investigated the sex crimes that happened in February 2007.

Around 5:30 a.m., police responded to train tracks near the intersection of Winner Road and Forest Avenue regarding a person who was hit by a westbound Union Pacific train.

Police on Thursday said they can’t comment on the circumstances around the accident until the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office has completed its investigation.
