Ken Harris, president of the Blue Springs Rotary Club
1 The Blue Springs Rotary Club's annual fundraiser is approaching. Can you tell us about it?
Our 18th Annual Car Raffle this year is on April 18th at Adams Pointe Conference Center. This is a fun, laid-back event where people can enjoy a great meal, browse the silent auction items and socialize – all while the reverse raffle is running. It is quite a show. Remember, 100 percent of the monies we collect from this fundraiser are returned to this community.
2 What does the Rotary Club do for the Blue Springs community?
Our biggest emphasis is toward kids and to family life. Every year, we give five $2,000 scholarships to local students. We provided the playground equipment at Rotary Park and at the Liggett Trails School. We donate funds every year to Hope House, the Rainbow Center and many more.
3 How long have you been a member and what is your title?
I have been a proud member of Rotary since October 1984. My current position is president, and I can't tell you how much fun I am having.
4 How can someone join the Blue Springs Rotary Club?
Membership to Rotary is by invitation. However, Rotary welcomes all community minded, service-oriented individuals. I would encourage any person interested in becoming a Rotarian to visit our website: www.bluespringsrotary.org for more information.
5 What local and/or international projects does your Rotary Club participate in?
We are extremely active in many events and projects in the Eastern Jackson County area. Besides the projects already mentioned, we partnered with the city to bring the Disc Golf Park to Blue Springs. Internationally, we participate in providing shoes to underdeveloped countries. We help build homes in Mexico. We are partnering with the Bill Gates Foundation to eradicate polio worldwide. For five days this spring, we'll be hosting five young professionals from South Africa for a Group Study Exchange. Rotary's motto is “Service Above Self” and we are living up to that motto.
