A man who was riding in a Ford Escort when it was struck by a freight train in Independence early Sunday has been identified as Independence resident Arthur K. Palley, 34.

A female passenger, Coli C. Lafferty, 25, also of Independence, was killed. Independence police said the male driver would not be identified until the case goes to the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office.

Both men are still in the hospital.

The Escort was northbound on Pleasant Street at 12:55 a.m. Sunday. At the railroad crossing at Pleasant and South Street the gates were down and the red flashing lights were activated for an approaching Union Pacific freight train.

The driver tried to cross the tracks, but the Escort was hit by the westbound train, which pushed the car for several hundred feet until the engineer was able to stop.

The investigation continues.
