Emma Jeanne Etzenhouser Agee, a lifelong resident of Independence, Missouri, died Sunday, May 23, 2010, at Sunrise of Leawood, Kansas.  She was 92 years old.

The youngest of nine children of Russell Duane Etzenhouser and Emma Elizabeth Winn Etzenhouser, she was born on April 5, 1918, in Independence. A 1936 graduate of William Chrisman High School, she studied classical piano with Arthur H. Mills at what was then known as the Kansas City-Horner Conservatory of Music, before continuing her music studies at the University of Idaho.  Returning to Missouri, she studied education at Central Missouri State Teacher’s College (now UCM), after which she taught in the Lexington, Missouri, public schools.

On June 20, 1942, she married Dr. Walter Richard (Dick) Agee, osteopathic physician of Independence, whom she first met in kindergarten.  The mother of five children, Mrs. Agee was active for many years in the Junior Service League of Independence, serving as its president in 1952-53.  In the late 1960s and early 1970s she co-managed a women’s clothing and accessories boutique, The Dress Shop.  She was an active volunteer and board member of the historic Vaile Mansion and Independence Jail Museum.  Mrs. Agee continued playing the piano music of her beloved Chopin, Beethoven, Liszt, Brahms and Rachmaninoff well into her 80s, loved reading the masterpieces of world literature, and enjoyed travel throughout Europe, Egypt and Russia.  

Mrs. Agee was preceded in death by Dr. Agee and their eldest son Walter Richard Agee, Jr.; her parents; and her siblings:  Dr. Russell Duane Etzenhouser, David Elias Etzenhouser, Dr. Merrill Etzenhouser, Dorothy (Mrs. Walter Gunderson), Lucille (Mrs. Leonard Webster), Muriel (Mrs. Reuben Seroy), and Margaret (Mrs. C. Ashby Shoop).

She is survived by a son, Anthony Agee of Kansas City, Mo.; three daughters: Elizabeth (Mrs. James A. Cogswell) of Columbia, Mo., Emily (Mrs. Drue Jennings) of Prairie Village, Kan., and Julia (Mrs. Craig Mahurin) of Leawood, Kan.; twelve grandchildren: Emily and Thomas Cogswell; Anthony, Brooke (Mrs. Farrell Bowden), Parker, and Timothy Agee; Grant, Elizabeth (Mrs. Gregory Steinberg) and Miles Golson; and Cam, Spencer, and Laura Mahurin; one great-grandchild, Parker Mahurin, and numerous nieces and nephews.
