Missouri’s Charlie Effinger has been named the Sher-Wood CHL Goaltender of the Month for March. It is the second time Effinger has won the award, claiming the top honor back in Oct. 2011, the first month of the season.

“Start strong, finish strong,” joked Effinger, as the Mavericks bus made its way to Evansville, Ind., for tonight’s 7:15 p.m. second game of the best-of-seven playoff series between Missouri and the IceMen.

“It’s like I’ve said, the individual honors don’t mean that much. We finished strong, which was great because it helped us get into the playoffs. Right now, all I’m thinking about is Game 2 of the playoff series.”

Effinger, who finished in a tie for the regular-season lead with 32 wins, was 7-2-1 in March with a shutout, .928 save percentage and 2.58 goals-against average.

“It was nice recognition for Charlie,” Mavericks coach Scott Hillman said. “He unfortunately didn’t receive any of the postseason awards for a goaltender, but we all know how valuable he was to our team.

“He kept us in a lot of games this season and as the defense improved in front of him, he really showcased his talent. The boys have so much confidence in Charlie. You can see it every time they step on the ice.”

Effinger was the only goaltender in the CHL to win the Goaltender of the Week Award four times this season.

“Charlie is our MVP,” forward Sebastien Thinel said. “He’s the best.”

In Game 1 of the playoffs, Effinger stopped all 16 Evansville shots in the third period and 35 of 37 attempts in the Mavericks’ 3-2 victory.
