The beach at Blue Springs Lake opens this weekend.

Weekend and holiday hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for those 16 and older and $3 for seniors and for those 15 and younger. Group rates are available.

Weekday hours are 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 1 to June 11, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 14 to Aug. 13 and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 16 to Sept. 3.

Season passes are available:

 $50 for one person.


 $70 for a junior family pass, for two people.


$90 for a family pass – four people –with an added $5 for every person after four.

Blue Springs Lake is a Jackson County facility, as is Longview Lake in Lee’s Summit, and the same hours and rates apply there. Longview Beach is closed Aug. 22.

The county’s Parks & Recreation Department has several events coming up in the new few weeks, including:

 Children’s Day and National Trails Day at Missouri Town 1855, a recreation of frontier days in Missouri. The event is from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 5. The cost is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and kids 5 to 13, and free for those under 5.

There will be sack races, pie-eating contests and other events. Missouri Town 1855 is in Fleming Park, southeast of Blue Springs. Call 816-503-4860.

 A flag raising at Fort Osage to mark Flag Day. The event is from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 12 at the historic fort in Sibley. You can learn about the American flag’s history and see examples of various flags from throughout the country’s history. The cost is $7 for adults, $4 for youths and $3 for seniors. Call 816-503-4860 or send an e-mail to To get to Fort Osage, Take U.S. 24 east to Buckner and turn left (north) on Route BB (Sibley Street). Go north a couple of miles (the road curves to the west) and look for signs.


 Lake Fest, an annual music and fireworks event at Lake Jacomo. It’s on June 19 and starts at 5 p.m. It also includes water balloon contests, games and boat rides, and wraps up with the fireworks show over the lake. The cost is $10 per vehicle and $5 for walk-ins. Call 816-503-4800.


 Jacomo Day Camp, from children 6 to 13, starts June 14 and runs for nine weeks. It’s at the Kemper Outdoor Education Center in Fleming Park, and weekly themes include “Earth Keepers,” “Hounds Abound” and “Science Soup.” Activities include canoeing, swimming, fishing and nature study.
