Jerry Dante Ryan, 80, of Odessa, Mo., also known as “Grouchy Bear,” passed away Thursday, July 19, 2012, at John Knox Village Hospice, Lee’s Summit, Mo.

Jerry was born February 6, 1932, in Springfield, Mo., the son of Harold Francis and Eleanor M. (Akridge) Ryan. He served his country in the United States Marines. Jerry was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove, the Elderberries, and the Odessa American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, training horses, traveling, and attending church. Jerry loved his family, especially his grandchildren.

His survivors include his wife of 56 years, Dixie, of the home; two daughters, Renee Edwards and husband, Jeff, of Oak Grove, and Renita Geddes and husband, Douglas, of Odessa; three sons, Michael Ryan of Colorado Springs, Colo., Mark Ryan and wife, Shelley, of Odessa, and Matt Ryan of Odessa; and seven grandchildren, Rachelle Pritchard and husband, Trent, Reanna Geddes, Adriana Ryan, Alexis Ryan, Kayla Ryan, Taylor Ryan and Shelbey Waln.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church, 14th and Salem, Oak Grove, Mo. Anyone who would like to come is invited. Bring some cookies or finger food, as we want to munch down as we share stories about him with others and listen to their stories.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Bridge of Faith Church in Rockaway Beach ( as that was the “Bear’s” favorite place, and we will feed their homeless for the winter), in care of First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 129, Oak Grove, MO. 64076.

Arrangements: Royer Funeral Home, 101 S.E. 15th St., Oak Grove, MO 64075, 816-690-4441.
