The library’s backpack drive, along with a school supply collection, is in coordination with Community Services League to help the organization meet its goal of providing 2,000 Eastern Jackson County children with school supplies.

Potential school supply donations include white and colored construction paper; calculators, both basic and Texas Instrument scientific; backpacks; boxes of tissues; bottles of hand sanitizer; white athletic socks; Crayola or Prang watercolor paints; Fiskar scissors; and 3-ring binders.

Those interested in helping also can contribute a gift of $25 to ensure one student will start the next school year with all the supplies he or she needs. Call 816-912-4484 for more information.

Families who are seeking assistance with school supplies must visit a local CSL office to sign up. Registrations are only accepted in person and cannot be accepted over the phone.

The Trumans and the Community Services League have a long-standing relationship as Bess Wallace Truman co-founded the group in 1916. To learn more, visit www.cslcares.org/give/back-to-school-fair or go to www.trumanlibrary.org/whistlestop/events/ and click on “Back to School Opportunity.”
