Two tough victories has landed the Blue Springs South boys tennis team in the finals of the Mid-Missouri Invitational.
The Jaguars (13-1) defeated Columbia Hickman and then used two doubles wins for a 5-4 decision over St. Louis Lafayette Friday.
Nick Monaco, Caleb Jeff, Chris Hammond, Brooks Stotts and Josh Payton were singles winners against Hickman. Monaco and Stotts prevailed in No. 1 doubles to give South the victory.
Monaco, Hammond and Payton triumphed in singles against Lafayette. The teams of Monaco-Payton and Hammond-Stotts posted the deciding doubles victories.
South meets defending state champion Columbia Rock Bridge at 9 a.m. Saturday for the title.
“I was very happy with my team’s play, especially in the second match,” South coach Sheri Rehmer said. “It came down to doubles. It was a very close match. Payton came through for us. He won a tiebreaker in singles and teamed with Nick to win No. 2 doubles.”
Four of the singles matches were decided by a tiebreaker.
BLUE SPRINGS TOURNAMENT: Blue Springs had to settle for seventh place in an eight-team field at Santa Fe Trail Park with 1.5 points. Rockhurst was the winner with 21.5 points.
“There were some tough teams in this tournament,” Blue Springs coach Jody McClain said. “We drew some bad seeds to start with. Playing these teams will make up better, especially our doubles teams.”
