A ceremony to commemorate the placement of the last beam atop the Independence Events Center is scheduled for next Thursday.

City officials and representatives of Global Entertainment will host a “topping off ceremony” from 2 to 4 p.m. at the new multi-purpose building at Interstates 70 and 470.

“We invite the public to come out and view this amazing new facility,” said Mike Young, general manager of the Independence Events Center.

The celebration will take place on the southwest side of the construction site at 19100 E. Valley View Parkway in the Eastland Business Center and will include a color guard presentation by Van Horn High School’s  ROTC, live music by the Truman High School Jazz Band, refreshments  courtesy of Cold Stone Creamery, and giveaways and prizes courtesy of the Independence Events Center. The public will also be able to sign a structural steel beam that will become a permanent fixture in the facility.

The Independence Events Center will feature an arena with 5,800 fixed seats, 25 luxury suites, a bar and grill and a community ice rink. It will host more than 100 events each year, including concerts, trade shows,  professional sporting events, festivals and community ceremonies. “The events center and community ice rink will serve the city of Independence and surrounding communities and will be the destination for affordable family entertainment,” Young said.

The facility will also be home to the new Independence Central Hockey League franchise, which on April 13 signed a 10-year lease with the city that guarantees at least 30 home games per season.

The franchise – whose ownership group is led by twin brothers Mark and Matt Adams of Lubbock, Texas, former owners of the Lubbock Cotton Kings franchise – will compete in the Northern Conference of the Central Hockey League starting this fall.

A deadline for fans to name the new hockey franchise is tonight at midnight. Log on to www.examiner.net to enter the contest.
